Temple Quarry Hike
270 S Donlee Dr
2.2 Mile Hike
Easy Level Hike
Such a great hike in the middle of St George!
It’s 2.2 miles round trip - with an option to go a tad farther to see more, but isn’t completely necessary if you didn’t want to.
I would definitely do this one as an evening hike, especially if it’s summer! If you go as the suns coming down, a majority of the hike is shaded. It makes it much more enjoyable and very picturesque!
This is an easy trail. A majority of it is flat, even with it being on a cliff. You can try it with a jogging stroller, if you did - start to the path at your right to avoid the small amount of stairs. There are sections with lava rocks, so use caution if you do.
The end of the hike is where the quarry was located. There is a small picnic table - it looked a little old and rickety so we didn’t really touch it - but it’s there!
The history behind this hike: the early settlers of St George (Mormon Pioneers) used this path to get to the quarry on the south side, known as the “black hill.” The quarry contained lava rocks - which were used to lay the foundation for the LDS Temple downtown. The trek from the quarry around the mountain made it easier for them to get to and from the temple.
There’s a plaque you can read about it, or the St George Temple Visitors Center has more info too!
Such a fun hike! We saw a desert tortoise!!! There’s also a ton of lizards around it. We had fun trying to catch a few. There’s also a park down the road you can finish and have a snack at if you wanted!
