Sandstone Quarry Trail

Sandstone Quarry Trail

976 N 700 W St George

1.0 mile hike

The trail runs along Dixie Red Hills Golf Course and is a quick, easy hike to do. It also has some great history involved with the trail!

The sandstone quarry was used when the Mormon Pioneers settled to St George. They used tools to break down the sandstone rocks into brick sizes and haul them down to be used on a majority of the buildings downtown. The most well known ones it was used for are the LDS Temple and the Tabernacle downtown. It was a 2.0 mile trek to take them there, so the hardest part was getting into town.

The trail is pretty easy to follow - except for one part that splits you off into two, about half way up. The path to the left will take you to the quarry. The path to the right will take you on a little trek up the mountain...so whatever you’re feeling up for is which direction you should take! (We took the right one and realized it was not the right one to the quarry 😅)

It’s located at the end of 700 W off of Diagonal Street. Park on the road and look for the plaques marking where the trail starts. Be sure to stay on the path too so you don’t go into the golf course! You may even find a couple golf balls if you’re lucky 🙃

Has anyone done this before? What’d you think? We loved the views and how easy it was to take our kids!
