Lava Tubes/Butterfly Trail

Lava Tubes/Butterfly Trail

Snow Canyon State Park

1.5 Mile Hike

Easy/Moderate

1.0 Mile round trip to Butterfly Trail

Can make it longer or start at different trailhead if needed to see more lava tubes.

One of the best things to see in Snow Canyon is the lava tubes! This trail will take you to one of them, with the option of seeing more. Plus it takes you to Butterfly Rock, which is a great distance hike for young kids if you’re looking for something short and scenic.

For the hike: Park at the Butterfly Trail Parking lot (west side past the camping ground). The trial is well marked and easy to start with.

The Butterfly Rock will catch you by surprise and is on your right .5 miles in.

To see the lava tubes: Continue past the rock until you get to a T crossing. Go left onto Lava Flow Trail to see Lava Tubes #3 (the one in the pictures). You can climb down them and explore if you’d like. Bring a flashlight, it’s pitch black inside!

To see the other two lava tubes, go back up Lava Flow Trail to see #2 and then #1. The other two are much harder to climb in, I would not bring young kids into them.

I actually haven’t been into them during the daylight 🤷‍♀️ so I couldn’t tell you where they are unless I went back and did the trail again haha.

They are so cool to explore! If going with younger kids, I would recommend just looking and exploring at an easy pace. With older kids, have fun climbing in and enjoying it - but again, be so so careful and only go somewhere you feel comfortable.

The other option you could do to see lava tubes only - park at the next parking lot up on the west side and start at Lava Flow Trail. It will take you to them in order.

This trail is marked as moderate for all the different changes in the trail - lava rock, slick rock, sand, dirt - it changes often. As well as climbing down into the lava tubes. But it is absolutely kid doable! And so much fun!
