Glitter Mountain

Old Gypsum Crystal Mine, Littlefield AZ

I really wish pictures did this place justice! It was so fun to walk around and find all these beautiful rocks that literally glitter in the sun. It looks like snow, but i’s really tons of gypsum rocks across this entire hill!

Glitter Mountain is about a 30 minute drive from the middle of town to the actual location. Don’t let Apple or Google maps scare you - it says it takes 2.5 hours haha. It doesn’t, I promise.

You do have to drive on a dirt road for about 8 miles or so, so plan accordingly. My suggestion:

If you have an ATV/SXS, use it. You’ll get there much faster and easier.

If not, you can use any kind of car. It’s a very well maintained dirt road and only has a couple “rough” spots, but nothing a car can’t handle.

However - I would avoid going on a rainy day or a day after a big rainstorm. You go through a flood wash at one point and can have a lot of standing water if it has rained, or the road itself can be super muddy.

For directions - we wouldn’t have made it without @hikestgeorge website. All credit goes to them for the awesome step by step directions that Google/Apple Maps just doesn’t have. Just Google “glitter mountain hike” and be sure to find their website - or here it is for you: https://hikestgeorge.com/glitter-mountain/

Follow them exactly and you won’t get lost at all! (Very last picture is a screenshot of what the directions are).

When you get there - you’re allowed to take home any rocks that you find! But you do have to pay for them. Be sure to find the white sign and find the person to Venmo. No one’s there asking you to pay so it’s really just the honor system, but be a good human and pay for what you’re taking ;)

Seriously such a cool, unique place. We took home some fun rocks and definitely want to come back again.
