Aviation Arrow Hike

The Arrow in Bloomington

643 W Sir Monte Dr

.5 mile walk/hike

Path goes up the water tank trail

A little back story- I hiked Shinob Kibe a month or so ago and became super fascinated with the big cement arrow at the top of it. So I did some research and discovered these arrows are all across the country and there’s THREE of them in the St George area!

So of course we had to come check it out! Here’s arrow 2/3 that I’ve seen - Bloomington Hill Arrow.

The second is Shinob Kibe.

The third one I haven’t been to yet is above the bluff by Quail Creek Reservoir (but I’ll go soon don’t you worry!)

What are these arrows for:

In 1920 airmail was new and the Pony Express had officially ended. Since aviation charts weren’t really a thing, pilots used landscape markings to know where they were and where they needed to go. These cement arrows were created all across the country and funded by Congress in 1924 and made quickly in the next few years.

In 1926, an airline was created to fly from LA to SLC and by 1928 the cement arrows were put in to help lead the way. The arrows point towards Salt Lake so they know where to turn to go North instead of still heading East.

This trail has two ways to get to the arrow. We found the easiest to hike and find was the path that goes up to the water tank. If you follow up it, the arrow is on the other side right next to the cliff.

It’s quite a drop off so be careful with young kids when you get to the top. Such an easy walk/hike up though!

For more info on all of this, I put a few articles on my website that have where they’re all located. KSL even made a map a couple years ago of all the ones in Utah. Super cool!

Have you been? Did you know these even existed?! I didn’t. Super fun to discover!
